KATHMANDU, April 21: The Supreme Court (SC) on Sunday issued an interim order against the Tribhuvan University (TU)´s recent decision to bar student leaders above the age of 28 from contesting free student union elections.

Responding to a writ petition filed by student leaders at the apex court, a single bench of Justice Gyanendra Bahadur Karki ordered the defendant to furnish clarifications within 15 days as to why the decision was taken.[break]

The SC has also called the writ petitioners and the defendant for discussion on whether the interim order should be continued. The apex court is yet to set the date for discussion.

Student leaders from 14 campuses, including Nepal Law Campus, Padma Kanya Campus and Tri Chandra Campus on Thursday moved the apex court arguing that TU´s decision is illegal.

They have maintained that the age limit for students contesting student union election should be removed as there is no age limit for continuing one´s studies. A meeting of TU senate on April 5 had decided to amend the provision that allowed candidates to contest student elections, irrespective of their age.

Chairman of Interim Election Council Khil Raj Regmi has been made defendant in the writ petition.
