KATHMANDU, Dec 24: The Supreme Court (SC) on Monday ordered the government to put on hold its decision to promote five Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) to Deputy Inspector General (DIG).

A single bench of Justice Damodar Prasad Sharma also called on the petitioners and defendants to be present in the court on December 31 to discuss whether to issue an interim order on the case. [break]

Challenging the government´s decision to promote police officials junior to them, SSPs Ravi Pratap Rana, Purna Singh Khadka, Manohar Prasad Rimal, Ram Kumar Khanal, Tara Prasad Lamichhane and Gyanod Raj Upadhyaya on Sunday moved the apex court seeking an interim order against the decision.

A cabinet meeting held on Wednesday had promoted SSPs Shyam Bahadur Khadka, Navraj Silwal, Praksh Aryal, Jaya Bahadur Chand and Bam Bahadur Bhandari to the post of DIGs.

The petitioners, claiming that all the officers who were promoted, except Khadka, are junior to them, had demanded that the SC issue an interim order against the decision.

The Prime Minister´s Office, the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Police Headquarters, among others, have been made defendants in the writ.
