Sankhuwasabha prison deaths: security person arrested for investigation

Sankhuwasabha, Aug 14: Police sub inspector Laxmi Chaudhary has been apprehended over the deaths of two inmates in the prison office, Sankhuwasabha last week.


The District Police Office, Sankhuwasabha has confirmed the arrest of Chaudhary on Sunday and it has already obtained permission from the District Court to keep the security person in five days of custody for further investigation into the case.


As office spokesperson Saroj Khanal said, Chaudhary was arrested based on an FIR registered by the families of the deceased. Following the registration of the FIR against Chaudhary and officiating jailor Rajendra Ghimire, the court permitted their arrest warrants.

Binod Tolangi, 20, of Madi Municipality-5 in Sankhuwasabha and Akash Balami, 28, of Kakani Rural Municipality-7 in Nuwakot succumbed to injuries from the alleged beatings within the jail.


However, the arrest of acting jailor Ghimire is still awaited.  Police said it has also been investigating the possible involvement of others in the case.


Meanwhile, the families of the deceased received the bodies today, five days after the incident. The post-mortem examinations of the bodies were conducted on Saturday. 


The families suspected that the two were killed following the physical assaults in the jail. Following the incident, the home ministry had formed a committee to probe the matter the same day on August 9.
