KATHMANDU, July: Roshan Karki, a lawmaker from the Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP), has requested the Parliamentary Hearing Committee not to approve Krishnaman Pradhan as a Commissioner of the Election Commission due to allegation of sexual abuse.

“Pradhan has been accused of sexually abusing a woman for a long time. She has also filed a complaint with the Parliamentary Hearing Committee,” Karki said while speaking in the House of Representatives (HoR) on Monday, “The victim has sought support from the court as well. Later, after reaching an agreement, Pradhan paid her Rs 12.5 million in installments, and she has receipts to prove it.”

Karki emphasized that approving Pradhan would disrespect the 51 percent of women and violate Article 247(6) of the Constitution. “Such accused persons should not be given a position in any capacity,” she said, “To be a commissioner, one must have high moral character. How can a sexual abuser be considered to have high character? I urge the Prime Minister and the Parliamentary Hearing Committee to take note of this.” Karki believes the Parliamentary Hearing Committee should find Pradhan unsuitable for the position.

The Parliamentary Hearing Committee is scheduled to meet this evening to decide whether to approve Pradhan.
