WATFORD, England, Aug 29: Wayne Rooney will revert to playing as a deep-lying forward for England under new coach Sam Allardyce but must wait until Tuesday to see if he is still captain.
Rooney finished last season as a central midfielder for Manchester United, and played there for England during its European Championship campaign that ended with an embarrassing last-16 loss to Iceland.
Hodgson and Rooney to English fans : 'Stay out of trouble'
New United manager Jose Mourinho has returned Rooney to the No. 10 role this season, and Allardyce said on Monday "that's the sort of position I'd be looking for him to be playing in."
The player most affected by that positional tweak is Ross Barkley, who was dropped by Allardyce in his first squad announcement since becoming coach. Barkley plays the same position as Rooney at Everton.
