Rolpa village declared free from caste-based discrimination

ROLPA, June 13: Rolpa district's Warchawang-4 in Madi Rural Municipality has been declared free from caste-based discrimination.

The announcement was made after the ward ended the practice of Balighare Pratha, a system whereby the so called lower-caste people serve the higher caste people with their traditional skills and get food (bali) in return.

Provincial Assembly lawmaker Dipendra Kumar Pun announced to abolish untouchability amid a program in the ward.

Pun said that since previous leaders had failed to abolish untouchability, the present authorities should take a stronger stance in putting an end to this malpractice.

During the announcement program, the Dalit community also displayed their traditional Sarange dance, Paiseru dance and Mayur dance while students performed a PT display. In the program, 22 couples who opted for inter-caste marriage were also honored. Similarly, the Dalits who built exceptional agricultural equipment were also honored.

In recent days, various wards in multiple districts have attempted to end untouchability to put an end to caste-based conflicts.

According to secretary of Samyukta Dalit Aadhikar Manch, Rolpa, Man Singh BK, of the total 72 wards in Rolpa, 15 have already been freed from untouchability and Balighare Pratha.
