Police said the exchange of gunfire took place between a team of policemen that was waiting for a band of robbers and the robbers.[break]
The police team had been keeping vigil on a tip-off.
The deceased robber is in his thirties and his name and address is not known.
Police confiscated a pistol and its ammunition from the slain robber.
The band of robber comprised about 25 persons and they opened fire at the police team.
Police suspects that many more robbers might have been injured in the gun-battle.
