DHANKUTA, Dec 22: The families of 15 Chhintang martyrs have yet to get the relief promised by Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal weeks ago.

PM Nepal had promised Rs 25,000 to each of the families during his visit to celebrate the 31st Chhintang Martyrs Anniversary on November 14 here.

Balaram Rai of Chhintang-9 has been making rounds of the District Administration Office (DAO) for the past month to claim compensation for the brutal murder of his father, but always returns home empty-handed.[break]

“Why announce relief if we are never to get it?” fumed Yogendra Rai, son of martyr Gopal Anand. The families of the martyrs said they have even contacted Peace and Reconstruction Minister Rakam Chemjong, who had accompanied PM Nepal and CPN-UML about the matter but to no avail. Even the government officials are unaware about PM´s declaration that day.

The DAO of Dhankuta had sent a list of 15 families to the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers a day after PM Nepal had made the announcement.

“We had sent the documents the next day after being told that the proposal had to be sent to the cabinet meeting but don´t know what happened thereafter,” Acting Chief District Officer Omkar Neupane said.

Neupane conceded that the DAO has not been able to distribute the promised amount. “We would go to visit the families to distribute the amount once the money arrives,” he assured.
