Adhikari of Phujel village, Gorkha was killed by Maoists during the insurgency in 2004 at Bakulahar Chowk of Ratnanagar, Chitwan. The Maoists have already admitted their role in the murder. After nine years of the incident, a case was filed at the District Court of Chitwan on April 13, 2014.
Usually the district court gives verdict within two years of filing of a case, but this has not happened in the Adhikari case.
Earlier, his elder brother Noor Prasad had filed an FIR against 13 persons reportedly involved in the murder.
Recording of statements of the plaintiffs and defendants of the Adhikari murder case has started from Sunday, according to Bidyaraj Paudel, registrar at the court. The court will record the statements of six persons from the plaintiff's side and 33 others from the defendants' side.
"As the recording of witnesses' statements has yet to be completed, it will take some time for the court to arrive at a verdict,” Chudamuni Sapkota, an advocate of Nepal Bar Association's Chitwan Chapter, said. According to him, half the procedure of the case has just been completed.
So far, police have arrested only two out of 13 accused while others are still at large. This has also caused delay in the court procedures, according to the court.
Police had started their investigation into the murder after his parents Nanda Prasad and Gangamaya started a fast-unto-death to exert pressure on the government to probe the murder. Nanda Prasad died in the course of his hunger strike on September 22, 2014 and his last rites have not yet been performed. Adhikari's mother Gangamaya says the family will not perform the last rites until justice is done.
