“The reason behind the growing popularity of instant food items is that such food products can be bought at a cheaper price at the department stores than having them in restaurants or cafes,” said C.N. Poudel, operations manager at Saleways. [break]
According to Poudel, Saleways has recorded a rise in the sale of instant food items by 38 to 40 percent this year as compared to the last year. Food products we sell are as hygienic as home made food, he said.
Fast food products such as sale roti, burger, pizza, mo:mo, sausage and bakeries among others are available in the range of Rs 35 to Rs 240 depending on the quantity. Of all the food varieties, mo:mo is the most selling product in all the department stores.
Poudel disclosed that Saleways is able to record an average daily turnover of Rs 70,000 from the sale of instant foods alone.
Shadev Chalise, sales executive at Bhatbhateni Department Store at Koteshwor, said sales of instant foods have lately increased because it is easy to cook and cheaper than eating out at restaurants. At Bhatbhateni the sale of instant food products increased by 25 to 30 percent this year as compared to last year.

Chalise said that newly married couples and working people frequently visit the store as they are very busy and don´t have enough time to prepare food at home.
He however said that it is not only the sales of the instant food products that has increased but their price has also surged by 30 percent on average due to the increase in the operating cost and increasing price of raw materials.
