KATHMANDU, Aug 26: Severe flooding and landslides along the Nepal-China border have caused significant damage on both sides, prompting Chinese President Xi Jinping to order intensified search and rescue efforts for those missing.
A sudden flood from the Tibetan side caused extensive damage in Gyirong County of the Tibet Autonomous Region. Floodwaters and mudslides damaged roads, communication networks and power infrastructure around the Gyirong Port in the China-Nepal border area.

According to Xinhua, Xi directed authorities to make every effort to locate and rescue the missing, mobilize all necessary resources for relief and rescue operations, and strengthen risk monitoring and early-warning systems to prevent further disasters. Gyirong Port is one of the major overland trade routes between China and Nepal.
In Nepal, the Bhotekoshi River flood caused significant loss of life and property in Rasuwa. Roads, settlements, government facilities and hydropower projects in Rasuwagadhi, Timure and Syafrubesi have been damaged. At least eight people have been confirmed dead, while a large number remain unaccounted for.
The flood also damaged the Miteri Bridge linking Nepal and China, the Rasuwagadhi customs area and hydropower infrastructure. Nepal Army, Nepal Police and Armed Police Force personnel continue search and rescue operations in the affected areas.
Although a sudden release of water from glacial lakes in Tibet is suspected, the exact cause of the flood has not yet been confirmed.
