KATHMANDU, Feb 3: Sarah Kay’s slam poetry workshops and performances in and around Kathmandu created a lot of buzz and caught attention of many people. Just after weeks of Kay’s departure, another slam poetry event is here for poetry enthusiasts.

Applications are now open for ‘QC Awards 2013: The Poetry Slam’ which is an inter school competition, for those aged between 14 to 21 years. [break]

The program has been divided into four different phases. Participants are to submit one of their original poems, either in English or Nepali language, no later than February 12. Eighty participants will be short listed for the second phase which includes a one-day workshop on written poetry and performance skills by Word Warriors, the first slam poetry group in Nepal.

For the third phase, short listed participants will have to audition to enter the final competition for which they will have to perform one original poem. 20 participants will be selected for the final phase which will have two rounds of competition. Five winners will be announced in the end.

Ujjwala Maharjan, Coordinator of Word Warriors, informed, “A-list spoken word poets like Bob Holman and Sarah Kay have performed here. Slam poetry is slowly building up a momentum in Kathmandu. We (Word Warriors) have been giving poetry workshops and we thought a competition would be the best follow-up.”

Maharjan was also among the top five winners at slam poetry contest organized by Quixote’s Cove in 2010.

QC has been organizing a series of competition titled ‘QC Awards’ since 2009. The first edition was a short story competition and after US Embassy brought slam poets Karem Finneyfrock, Danny Solis and Matt Mason, the slam poetry movement was introduced in Kathmandu. Word Warriors was hence formed. This is the second slam poetry contest by QC after the first one in 2010.

For details on submission guidelines, visit the event page on Facebook –‘QC Awards 2013: The Poetry Slam’. Forms are available online and registration fee is priced at Rs 200.
