BIRATNAGAR, March 21: Agitating students have prevented Vice Chancellor of Purbanchal University Maheshwar Man Shrestha, who was acquitted by the court in a graft case, from resuming office.

Shrestha, who reached office to resume his office as Vice Chancellor of the university on Friday, was forced to leave the office by agitating students. The agitating students have maintained that he had tried to resume office without fulfilling due procedures.

Agitating students had intervened after Shrestha did not pay heed to the request by student leaders and university teachers not to resume the office. “We forced him out of the office premises in a disciplined manner,” said student leader Krishna Karki.

Shortly after Shrestha was forced to go out of the university premises, another vice chancellor Shirish Rijal had reached the office. Students, however, had allowed Rijal to go to office.

Rijal has been maintaining that he is the official Vice Chancellor until Shrestha completes all necessary procedures. He has also warned of knocking the court door if Shrestha resumed office without fulfilling necessary procedures. “I am ready to quit the post after I receive a letter from the body that appoints Vice Chancellor,” he said.

Shrestha, who had reached the office at 9:45 am Friday, to resume office at Pushpalal Chowk, had verbal altercation with Assistant Dean Udaya Prasai. The verbal altercation took place after Prasai suggested to Shrestha to complete necessary formalities before joining office.
