Price of seasonal vegetables has increased by Rs 2 to Rs 15 per kg due to lower supply from neighboring districts. [break]
Price of tomato small, tomato big, carrot, cauli local and white radish has increased by Rs 2 to Rs 20 whereas cabbage, onion, pumpkin and sword beans have fallen by Rs 1 to Rs 10 per kg compared to last week.
The reason for the increase in the price is lower supply from neighboring districts due to festivals and reduced production in the valley.
"Vegetables produced in neighboring districts, which should have been brought to the valley, haven´t arrived. Because, it´s being consumed there itself. Shortage of supply in the valley is shooting up prices," said an official of Kalimati Fruits and Vegetables Market Development Board (KFVMDB).
Geeta Parsad, a wholesaler at Kalimati Fruits and Vegetables Market, said a decline in the supply of major vegetables has led to the increase in price. In normal season, around 600 metric tons of vegetables enter the valley daily from neighboring districts. But with the arrival of festival season, only around 350 to 400 metric tons of vegetables is entering the valley daily.

Major price increment is seen in cow pea, bottle gourd and radish white which increased by Rs 11, Rs 13 and Rs 15 respectively. The price increment in some of these vegetables is as high as 50 percent in a week´s time.
"As the production of all vegetables has declined locally as well as internationally, price of some vegetables has been continuously increasing," said Parsad.
He further added that compared to last week, price of vegetables has increased by almost 30 percent and it will continue to rise as there is low supply but demand is high.
