KATHMANDU, Feb 2: The ruling Sadbhawana Party (SP) has said that the president should approve the election related ordinances, if the major opposition parties --Nepali Congress (NC) and CPN-UML-- fail to forge consensus on the formation of a national consensus government.

The ongoing extended meeting of the party´s central committee in the capital has also concluded that promulgating a federal republican constitution is not the major problem. [break]

“If NC and CPN-UML do not agree on formation of a national consensus government, the president cannot obstruct conduct of fresh polls," said Chairman of SP Rajendra Mahato, who is also the health minister.

The president´s office has rejected two election related ordinances forwarded by the present caretaker government stating that the ordinances were irrelevant as the major parties have not agreed to hold fresh elections. The party has maintained that the current political transition would not complete until the country gets a new statute.

Mahato said the national consensus government should be formed under the leadership of an independent person.

“A national consensus government should be formed under the leadership of an independent person for three months in order to hold the Constituent Assembly (CA) polls,” he said. The party has also reiterated that promulgation of the new constitution from outside the CA would not be acceptable to them.

SP has also stressed the need for a package deal on all issues including CA polls and leadership of the new national consensus government, among others.

According to the leaders, the Madhes-based party has also decided to expand its organizations in all the 75 districts within next three months to accommodate leaders from all communities in the party.

The extended meeting of the party will continue on Sunday.
