President attends Basanta Panchami function

KATHMANDU, Jan 31: President Dr Ram Baran Yadav attended Basanta Panchami function at Basantapur, Hanumandhoka in the capital Saturday morning. Vice-president Paramananda Jha, Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal and chiefs of other constitutional bodies also attended the function, which has been celebrated as a national festival for centuries. Previously, kings and other royal members used to attend the ceremony before the Constituent Assembly abolished the country’s two-and-half-century-old monarchy last year. As part of the tradition, head of state listens to some religious hymns from priests on the occasion.
