Police probe prison attack

CHITWAN, Dec 10: Police on Saturday initiated investigations against nine inmates suspected of involvement in the attack on Chitwan Tarun Dal President Shiva Poudel inside Bharatpur jail.



Chief of Chitwan Police Bhupal Bhandari said the nine have been taken to custody following investigations by a four-member probe team under Shankar Koirala, joint secretary, home ministry. [break]



“We have also brought them here to diffuse probable tension inside the prison. Interrogation will be easier here,” SP Bhandari explained.



Sunil KC, Suraj Shrestha Chhoila, Sharan Gurung, Dil Bahadur Lama, Sunil Gurung, Sujendra Rai, Amir Lama, Fanindra Shrestha and Prakash Shrestha are the ones to be taken to custody, while 13 other inmates from the Block D are still in jail. Poudel and four other inmates from Block C including Hari Gurung, Badri Dhungana, Pradip Bhatta and Gopi Pariyar were also injured in the attack on Tuesday.



Meanwhile, the probe team on Saturday took statements from the suspended police personnel who were on duty on the day of attack and relatives of the attacked inmates. “We have almost completed investigation inside the prison. We will interrogate further if required,” coordinator of the probe committee Koirala said.



Poudel´s wife Bina claimed her husband´s final hearing at Hetauda Appellate Court was scheduled for Tuesday and he was set to be released that day. She claimed the attack was made with the intent to kill before he was released.



She has also told the probe committee that the doctors at Bharatpur Medical College, where Poudel is being treated, have also been threatened to not save his life.
