Police constable who shot at Barshaman Pun's mother arrested, further investigation underway

KATHMANDU, April 15: The police constable who shot at the mother of CPN (Maoist Center) leader Barshaman Pun has been arrested. Police said further investigation into the incident is currently underway.

Tirthamali Pun, 74, was injured when shots fired at the house of leader Pun's brother at 9:30 pm on Friday night. She is being treated at the trauma center.

As soon as the information was received at 1 o'clock in the night, the police arrested the police constable Prakash Pun Magar who opened fire. He is being interrogated at the police headquarters, Naxal.

According to sources, he is also a relative of leader Pun. According to a close source, they are also neighbors in his home village in Rolpa. Magar is currently a police constable who provides security to Acting Chief Justice Hari Krishna Karki. 

"Magar used to come often as he is also a friend of leader Pun's brother," a source close to Pun said, "He came on Friday as well as there was a new year celebration in the house. He used to call Pun's mother as his grandmother."

According to the police, security personnel assigned to protect special people are given weapons as they may need them at any time. An officer of the Kathmandu Police Range, Kathmandu said that there was a dispute over a general matter after Constable Magar was drunk there.

"During the dispute, he took out his pistol, and it seems that it went off suddenly," said the officer.

Tirthamali Pun was injured in the leg. Sources said that constable Prakash ran away after the shooting. Although the incident happened at 9:30 PM on Friday, police received the information only at 1 am. According to police, Prakash was arrested from his room by a team deployed for his search and arrest.
