Police Club lifts boxing title

KATHMANDU, Dec 15: Departmental teams dominated the First Nationwide Open Boxing Championship as Nepal Police Club lifted the men´s team championship trophy to finish ahead of Tribhuvan Army Club and Armed Police Force (APF) Club on Saturday.



Police won four golds for the title while Army and APF both claimed 3 golds each but Army secured the second position with six silver medals to that of three silvers claimed by APF.[break]



In the women´s section, APF dominated the headline winning four out of seven golds. Police claimed the remaining three golds.



Sanju Lama, Pramila Chaudhary, Maya Chaudhary and Saraswati Rana Magar claimed golds for APF in their respective weight categories.



Lama, who had participated in the AIBA World Championship a few years ago, defeated Laxmi Thapa Magar of Budhanilkantha in the final of women´s 57 kg weight category. Pramila Chaudhary beat Shanti Chaudhary of Kanchanpur to claim the title of women´s 48 kg category while Maya Chaudhary saw off Sunita Maharjan of Bosigaun in the women´s 51 kg final. Likewise, Magar defeated Menuka Chaudhary of Salyan to win gold in women´s 66 kg category.



Meanwhile, Nisha Tamang (54 kg), Dewana Sherma (45 kg) and Minas Rai (64 kg) secured golds for Police.



The top three position holders in each weight category of the women´s section were handed Rs 5,000, Rs 3,000 and Rs 2,000 respectively by Lalitpur District Boxing Association President Ram Awale. The women boxers were handed over the incentives as their medals were not counted in the tally for the team championship, according to boxing coach Prachanda Sharma.



Meanwhile, the boxers from the Army Club stole the limelight in the men´s heavyweight section but were pipped by Police, who secured one more gold than the armymen but lagged far behind in the count for silver medals. Besides the three gold medalists, Army had six finalists who secured silvers while none of the Police players featured in the finals besides its four gold medalists.



Sudesh Manandhar (52 kg), Dinesh Shrestha (60 kg), Bhupendra Thapa (64 kg) and Ratna Bahadur Tamang (69 kg) won golds for Police.



Meanwhile, Shyam Khadka defeated his clubmate Bal Krishna Rijal to win gold in an all-Army final in the above 91 kg category. Dipesh Lama (81 kg) and Uddab Khatri secured the other golds for Army.



Likewise, Bikram Pariyar (49 kg), Puran Rai (56 kg) and Min Prakash Jora (91 kg) secured golds for APF.
