Under the new strategy, the police personal who cannot communicate properly with foreign tourists will be replaced with those with good command of English language and have passed at least SLC. The new strategy is expected to be fully implemented within the next three months

Superintendent of Police Kedar Rijal, who was transferred to the District Police Office, Kaski in Pokhara just 10 days ago, announced the new strategy of tourist-friendly policing in Pokhara. He informed that the new plan would be implemented in phases with the lakeside-based Baidam Police Station set to be the first tourist-friendly police station in the city.

Out of over 70 police personnel are deployed under the leadership of a police inspector in the Baidam, around 25 percent (18 policemen) have not done their SLC. SP Rijal is planning to replace those without SLC with SLC graduates who are currently working at the DPO.

“We will start implementing the plan from Baidam police station and it will be implemented in the entire Pokhara city gradually,” said SP Rijal. Rijal also informed that even SLC graduate police men will be given necessary training to enhance their English communication skills.

According to Rijal, police personnel of different ranks will be given training to improve their communications and people skills for dealing with tourists. Rijal was of the opinion that the police personnel who cannot deal with the tourists courteously are not fit to work in Pokhara. He stressed the need for ´tourist friendly policing´ in Pokhara saying it is a tourist hub visited every year by thousands of tourists from across the world.

SP Rijal also said he would work to stop prostitution, hooliganism, theft and gambling among other security threats in the city. He also claimed that stricter measures would be followed to contain drug abuse in the city. Accordig to Rijal, his office plans to clean the Phewa Lake and bring action plan to control adbuctions and extortions, thefts and drink driving.
