KATHMANDU, March 5: Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal on Friday held a meeting with leaders of the Nepali Congress (NC) and CPN-UML in a bid to fill vacant positions in the constitutional bodies. The meeting, however, could not reach a decision.

The prime minister has decided to hold meeting with other coalition partners before settling the issue of appointments. The government has been unable to appoint chiefs of various constitutional bodies, including Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority, Public Service Commission, Election Commission and Office of Auditor General, due to disagreement among political parties over sharing of the vacant positions. Earlier, the Parliamentary State Affairs Committee on had directed the Prime Minister to fill all the vacant positions within a month. The SAC meeting had concluded that it was matter of “great shame” to keep the top positions in constitutional bodies vacant for such a long time.

UML leader Bharat Mohan Adhikari said the meeting could not arrive at any decision as NC leaders said they would talk to the party president Girija Prasad Koirala before finalizing the agreement.

UML Chairman Jhala Nath Khanal, Bishnu Poudel, Bharat Mohan Adhikari and NC Vice President Ram Chandra Poudel and Ram Sharan Mahat, among others, were present in the meeting.
