KATHMANDU, Aug 7: Prime Minister KP Oli has congratulated Sri Lanakan Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa on the landslide victory achieved by his party Sri Lanka Podujana Party (SLPP).

Prime Minister Oli called Prime Minister Rajapaksa over the telephone to congratulate him on the unprecedented victory as his party, SLPP won 145 seats and can also count on the support of at least five allies in the 225-member legislature.

“I called Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa of Sri Lanka today to congratulate him on behalf of the government and people of Nepal as well as on my own and the NCP, on the landslide electoral victory of SLPP and conveyed best wishes for his successful tenure in office,” Prime Minister Oli tweeted.

According to the poll results released earlier on Friday, the SLPP's nearest rival party obtained just 54 seats in the general election held on Wednesday. The election saw more than 75 percent voters turnout of the 16.2 million eligible voters.

Prime Minister Rajapakshy’s own younger brother Gotabaya Rajapaksa is currently the president of Sri Lanka. Prime Minister Mahinda is mostly likely to be sworn in to the same position by President Gotabaya. There are fears within Sri Lanka and beyond that the landslide victory of Prime Minister Rajapakshya could enable them to change the constitution and strengthen the dynastic rule.

Responding to Prime Minister Oli’s message of congratulation, Sri Lankan Prime Minister Rajapaksya has thanked Prime Minister Oli for the warm wishes and his invitation to visit Nepal. “Sri Lanka values its friendly relations with your country & will always stand by the people of Nepal in times of need. I look forward to further enhancing our cooperation,” tweeted Rajapakshya.
