KATHMANDU, March 25: Prime Minister Sushil Koirala has extended heartfelt condolence and deepest sympathy to the family members of late Lee Kuan Yew, founding leader and the first prime minister of Singapore.

In a condolence message sent to Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, Koirala said he is saddened to learn of the untimely passing away of Lee Kuan Yew. "At this moment of grief, the people and the government of Nepal join me in extending the heartfelt condolences and deepest sympathies to Your Excellency and through you to the bereaved family members of the late leader and the people of Singapore," he said in the message.

Koirala said Lee Kuan Yew was a legendary leader of his time. "The contributions made by him in the rapid transformation of Singapore as a modern and prosperous country remain inspiring. In his death, the world has lost a fine statesman and Singapore its architect," he further said.

Lee, who transformed the former British colony into the first world in his life time, died on Monday at the age of 91 while undergoing treatment at the Singapore General Hospital. He had been under intensive care for pneumonia since early February. Singapore has declared seven days of national mourning starting Monday. A state funeral for Lee is scheduled for March 29.

Separately, Foreign Minister Mahendra Pandey also expressed heartfelt condolence over the demise of the founding father of Singapore. "With vision and dedication Lee Kuan Yew made himself immortal in the form of modern Singapore. Every political leader must learn from his life," he wrote in his twitter.

Likewise, Nepali Congress (NC) leader and Finance Minister Dr Ram Sharan Mahat expressed his tribute to late Lee Kuan Yew. "My tribute to Lee Kuan Yew, architect and maker of modern Singapore, who transformed a third world country to first world in his own life time," he said on twitter.
