KATHMANDU, May 4:  On the third day of their indefinite general strike, Maoists have stated that their patience is fast running out as the party´s demand for a Maoist-led national government to conclude the peace process and draft "a people´s constitution" has so far only fallen on deaf ears.

Maoist chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal said so at his residence at Naya Bazaar after making a round of the Kathmandu Ring Road encircled by a human chain of Maoist cadres Tuesday evening.[break]

"The process of reaching consensus through dialogues is getting late. People´s patience is running out fast. We have called on the people stage demonstrations more stridently from tomorrow," said Dahal who was accompanied by top party leaders including Mohan Baidya and Dr Baburam Bhattarai during the trip. "They must realize its consequences. It would be too late in a couple of days (to address the Maoist demands," he warned.

The Maoist brass stood at the back of a truck while making round of the ring road waving at the cheering party cadres.

Dahal said that he is hopeful of a solution in a few days. "If not, people (from the streets) will come out with a solution," he said.

Maoist plan to mobilize local Newar community

Earlier in a meeting at Naya Bazaar, top Maoist leaders concluded that the denizens of Kathmandu, especially the members of Newar community, have so far refrained from hitting the streets, and decided to come up with special programs to mobilize them.

"We are launching special programs for the participation of the Newar community in the demonstrations," said Maoist vice-chairman Narayankaji Shrestha after the meeting. According to him, the party will urge Newar organizations and prominent individuals to take part in the demonstrations.

Maoists have brought in thousands of cadres and supporters from across the country, especially from the surrounding districts, for what they call Janaandolan-3.

However the party has so far failed to gain the supports of the locals or those who have been residing in Kathmandu for long.

Maoists to prevent ministers from entering Singha Durbar

Intensifying the protest, the Maoists have decided to not let the government ministers enter Singha Durbar, the government secretariat. "We have found that government ministers are entering Singha Durbar using the police vehicles. We will stop that from tomorrow," said Shrestha.

Cadres and supporters have not returned home

The party has also denied reports that the cadres and supporters brought to Kathmandu for the demonstrations are deserting the valley. "Some of the cadres returned home under the party´s direction. But it was exaggerated," said Shrestha adding that new hosts of the Maoists would enter the valley in the coming days.

Life paralyzed in the capital

The Maoist general strike continued to paralyze life in the capital. The demonstrations, however, remained largely peaceful. While public and private vehicles did not ply the streets, marketplaces, educational institutions and factories remained shut.
