Patan High Court issues show cause order over arrest of Ashika Tamang

On January 9, Tamang reached the Pashupati Temple premises and presented herself in an indecent manner to the officers, employees and police of the Pashupati Area Development Trust.

KATHMANDU, Jan 17: The Patan High Court has issued a show cause order over the arrest of controversial social activist Ashika Tamang. The bench of Judge Shyam Kumar Bhattarai on Friday asked for the reason for the arrest while hearing a habeas corpus petition against Tamang’s arrest.


On Thursday, Tamang’s habeas corpus application was filed in the court. Arjun Prasad Acharya, information officer of the court, said that the bench ordered the Kathmandu Police and District Administration Office Kathmandu to appear with reasons on January 19.

Acharya said that even though the police and the administration were ordered to appear with reasons, Tamang, who was in custody, was not brought to the court.


On January 9, Tamang reached the Pashupati Temple premises and presented herself in an indecent manner to the officers, employees and police of the Pashupati Area Development Trust. In response, the police arrested Tamang on January 15. The chief district officer of Kathmandu has granted permission to the police to detain Tamang for five days for investigations into indecent behavior.
