Issuing a press statement hospital director Dr Rachel Karrach has said the death was due to disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) - abnormal bleeding due to inability of the blood to clot because of the formation of small blood clots inside the blood vessels throughout the body which consume all the available coagulation proteins and platelets disrupting normal clotting -following a possible amniotic fluid embolus.
Amniotic fluid embolism (AFE) is a rare obstetric emergency in which it is assumed that amniotic fluid, fetal cells, hair, or other debris enter the maternal circulation, causing cardiorespiratory collapse.
The statement says Dr Karuna Acharya gave excellent care to Karki, a household helper for hospital doctors, and slammed certain sections of media for singling out Dr Acharya, who was working as a part of a six-doctor team, calling it unjust and libelous.
The Palpa District Police Office told Republica that there has been no official complaint against the hospital by Karki´s family. Some locals encircled the hospital Friday in protest, accusing the hospital staff of negligence. “She (Karki) was a hospital staff and the matter ended after the hospital agreed to provide education for her children,” constable Ram Das Upadhyaya at the complaints section of the police office said.
The statement further says that its agreement to form a committee for investigation and provide compensation should not be construed as its admission of wrongdoing.
Speaking to myrepublica.com, Karki´s husband said that they will wait for the committee´s report and pursue the matter after the completion of 13 days of mourning rituals. “The hospital has agreed to educate the children (three girls and the newborn) and provide employment to one of them,” said Anil Karki over the phone.
