Over 30 civil society leaders arrested from outside Prez's office

KATHMANDU, May 5: Police on Tuesday morning arrested over 30 civil society leaders from outside the office of President Dr Ram Baran Yadav at Shital Niwas, Maharajgunj.



Police rounded them up while they were staging demonstration against the president’s move to block prime minister’s decision to sack army chief Rookmangud Katawal.



The agitating civil society members had chanted strong slogan against President Dr Yadav, terming him ‘autocratic president’ and asking him to tender his resignation right away.



Superintendent of Police Nawa Raj Silwal, chief of Metropolitan Police Range Office, Kathmandu, said they were arrested as they staged demonstration in the prohibited zone.



The government on Monday declared the area outside President’s office at Shital Niwas and Nepal Army Headquarters at Bhadrakali as prohibited zones keeping in view possible demonstration in the areas.



The arrested include Dr Devenrdra Raj Panday, Dr Sundar Mani Dixit and Krishna Pahadi, among others. The arrested have been kept at Number Two Battalion of Nepal Police at Maharajgunj.
