Opposition parties ask President Bhandari to initiate process to form majority govt

KATHMANDU, May 10: Three opposition parties in parliament have asked President Bidya Devi Bhandari to initiate the process to form a new government as per Article 76(2) of the Constitution of Nepal.

KATHMANDU, May 10: Three opposition parties in parliament have asked President Bidya Devi Bhandari to initiate the process to form a new government as per Article 76(2) of the Constitution of Nepal.


Issuing a joint statement on Monday evening, the main opposition party, Nepali Congress (NC), President Sher Bahadur Deuba, CPN (Maoist Center) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal and Chairman of Janata Samajbadi Party (JSP) Upendra Yadav have urged President Bhandari to initiate the process to form a majority government led by a leader who is able to command the support of two or more than two parties in parliament.

The call of three opposition parties in parliament comes shortly after Prime Minister K P Oli failed to win the vote of confidence motion in parliament. Prime Minister Oli, who opted to seek the House’s trust in his government as per Article 100 (1) of the Constitution of Nepal, managed to garner only 93 votes, which fell short of 43 votes to reach the 136-mark and win the confidence. A total of 124 lawmakers of the opposition alliance had voted against Prime Minister Oli’s vote of confidence motion.
