Only 18 years or above to obtain motorcycle license

The Motor Vehicles and Transport Management Act, 2049 (1993) stipulates that a person must be 16 years of age to obtain a driving license for motorcycles, two-wheelers and three-wheelers. The MoPIT confirmed that a draft for a new law has been prepared, setting the age limit at 18 years.

KATHMANDU, Feb 27: The government is preparing to increase the age limit for obtaining a driving license. The Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport (MoPIT) has prepared a draft for this provision in the Vehicle and Traffic Management Regulations, 2081.


The Motor Vehicles and Transport Management Act, 2049 (1993) stipulates that a person must be 16 years of age to obtain a driving license for motorcycles, two-wheelers and three-wheelers. The MoPIT confirmed that a draft for a new law has been prepared, setting the age limit at 18 years.

Similarly, according to the proposed provision the age requirement to obtain a large vehicle driver's license will now be moved from 21 to 23 years. Similarly, the age limit for obtaining a medium and small vehicle driving license is to be set at 21 years. 


The Motor Vehicles and Transport Management Act, 2049 mentioned that citizens who have reached the age of 18 are permitted to operate medium and small vehicles. The new provision seeks to change this.
