One killed, dozens of VDCs disconnected as rain creates havoc

KATHMANDU, Aug 6: A kid was killed by landslide in Janakpur, five houses were swept in Chitwan and land transport was obstructed in at least two districts by rainfall, according to our correspondents. [break]



According to our Janakpur correspondent Suresh Kumar Yadav, flood in Baluwa River drowned Kari Mandal, 7, of Giddha-8. The boy was trying to cross the swollen river when he was swept.



The swollen Baluwa river has affected several VDCs including Giddha, Belapatti, Navatoli, Bafai, Karmahi, Jogiyara, according to Sanjeev Mandal, a local. Another two dozen VDCs face the risk of flooding from Kamala and Jalad rivers.







Our Chitwan correspondent Chandni Hamal said five houses were swept by the Rapti river in western Chitwan Thursday. All the houses were located in Dhruva village in western Jagatpur.



The river swept the house of Santa Bahadur Tamang, Moti Bote, Jange Bote, Kancha Bote and another unidentified individual. All those whose houses were swept are taking refuge in the houses of their neighbors. Many people from the Bote community have left their houses and moved to safer places.



There are some 70 households in Dhruva village. After flood entered the village, the neighboring Ghailaghari, Belhatta, Khadgauli, and Dhampush villages are also at risk.



Meanwhile, mudslides have started from a hill in Kabilas VDC. There are mudslides along the road from Narayanghat to Kathmandu. Police have been removing the debris to ensure smooth passage of vehicles.



Of the 36 VDCs in Chitwan, nine are at risk of water-induced disasters. Kabilas, Meghauli, Gardi, Baghauda, Piple, Bachauli, Kathar, Kumroj and Bhandara are the most vulnerable VDCs.



Meanwhile, our Baglung correspondent Dilip Poudel has reported that rain has damaged the Beni-Jomson road obstructing traffic movement. The road has been damaged in Chamere area. This has prevented the operation of all vehicles that ply from Myagdi´s headquarters Beni to Mustang. This is a popular route for tourists.



The road damage has also affected people living in Bhurung, Tatopani, Shikh, Ghar and Ramche VDCs of Myagdi. The villagers aren´t able to operate even mules to procure supplies.



Landslides have also affected some two dozen VDCs in western part of Parbat district. According to Area Police Office Huwas, there is debris at several places along the track road connecting Waling of Syangja district and Huwas of Parbat district.
