“Nurses serving patients in hospital are subject to many kinds of violence, but the story of such violence rarely comes out of the hospital door,” said Usha Thapa, chairperson of Chitwan Nursing Association.[break]
According to Central Chairperson of Nepal Nursing Council, Daya Laxmi Shrestha, in course of serving the hospital patients, nurses have to endure mistreatment from the patients´ relatives as well as from senior hospital staff, and this discourages them in the discharge of their duty.
Working late at night, nurses undergo many kinds of violence but they never report such incidents to the authorities for fear of losing their jobs, said nurse Ritu Ghimire.
They claimed that the work environment for nurses is still not safe. Nurse Ayodhya Pathak opined that violence against women can be mitigated only with improvements in the political, social and familial situation.
“Although security guards are posted at the door for hospital safety, little attention is paid to the safety of nurses working inside,” said Pathak.
The nurses also organized a rally on the occasion of the 51st Nursing Day, drawing the government´s attention toward the insecurity they have been facing at the workplace.
Over 1,000 nurses are working in Chitwan alone. Lately, the nursing profession has become popular among girls.
