KATHMANDU, Feb 11: President of Nepal Students Union Nainsingh Mahar on Monday said he would step down from the post.
In a press statement, Mahar stated that he is resigning from the post. It is learnt that Mahar is submitting a resignation letter to Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba later today.
NSU protests demanding resignation of home and finance minister...
Mahar, in the statement, said that it would be unwise to stay in position as the members of the NC's Central Committee remained sharply divided over whether to give continuity to the existing leadership of the organisation that he was leading for more than two and half years. NSU is the student wing of the Nepali Congress, the main opposition party in the Parliament.
The extended term of the student wing’s incumbent committee expired last month. Even though, the Central Committee held rounds of discussions over the fate of the NSU, leaders remained divided over whether to form an ad-hoc committee or extend the term of the existing committee.
Ealier, the NC had extended the term of the incumbent committee led by Mahar after the student wing failed to elect a new leadership through its general convention within the given deadline. With the NSU statute provisioning two years tenure for the executive committee, which was elected in 2016, most of the leaders are for forming an ad-hoc committee to hold the convention.
