KATHMANDU, Sept 8: The student wing of the ruling Nepali Congress, Nepal Students Union (NSU), has submitted a letter to the Department of Transportation Management (DoTM), demanding an investigation and action in the case of illegal driving licenses and ensure that millions of licensees currently without a printed license card be issued the card by the soonest.

A team of members of the NSU led by central committee member Narayan Poudel submitted a 13-point attention letter to the DoTM demanding an investigation into the issue of illegal licenses, and calling for strict action against the culprits.

The statement from the NSU reads, “A thorough investigation should be conducted into the case where approximately 30,000 illegal licenses were entered into the DoTM's database over a six-month period with the involvement of DoTM's high ranking officials, other governmental officials, and middlemen; and those responsible should face the strictest penalties.”

Similarly, the letter also highlighted that the approximately 2.3 million people who passed the driving license tests over the last two years and are yet to be issued a printed license are losing faith in the state and the government. The NSU has demanded that the said individuals should be issued their license without having to compromise their details to foreign printing company.

Furthermore, the student organization has demanded that the department must update its Electronic Driving License and Vehicle Registration System (EDLVRS) to ensure that service-seekers need not line up at the department office for the entire day for services that can be delivered online. According to the NSU, the department must also initiate an investigation into whether the frequent problems on the server of the DoTM are real or artificial. The NSU mentioned in the memorandum that the DoTM has deliberately crashed its software to facilitate the purchase of new software favorable to businesses in the game of commissions and to cover up its shortcomings.
