NSU announces new protest

KATHMANDU: Nepal Students´ Union (NSU), the student wing of Nepali Congress, on Sunday announced fresh protest programme alleging that the government ignored its 18-point demand. The announcement comes in the wake of increasing instances of clashes between the students affiliated with NSU and Maoist-affiliated All Nepal National Independent Students´ Union-Revolutionary (ANNISU-R) in various parts of the country.

Speaking at a press conference in Kathmandu, NSU President Pradip Poudel said they would launch pamphleteering in various colleges in and outside Kathmandu Valley on December 22, launch signature campaign to press the demands on December 23 and hold motorcycle rally in Kathmandu and bicycle rally outside Kathmandu Valley on December 24. Likewise, the NSU will hold public hearings at Maitighar Mandala on December 26 and hold rally in colleges across the country on December 28.


Among others, the NSU has asked the government to stop all kinds of "anarchic" activities and physical attacks on college campuses and review transport fares and hold Free Students Union election on February 27, 2008, among other things. Poudel alleged that police had been giving protection to Maoist YCL cadres even as they entered college campuses with illegal arms.
