NPC wins Martyrs' Gold Cup

KATHMANDU, Feb 21: Nepal Police Club (NPC) lifted two trophies in as many weeks after defeating New Road Team (NRT) 5-4 in sudden death in the final of the First Martyrs’ Gold Cup Invitation Football Tournament held in Birtamode, Jhapa on Saturday. [break]



The match went to tie-breaker and then sudden death after both sides failed to find the back of the net in the stipulated 90 minutes and in extra time.



NPC won the final after NRT’s star striker Nirajan Rayamajhi failed to score in sudden death. With that, NRT’s dream of winning its first trophy of the year also came crashing down.



All Nepal Football Association (ANFA) President Ganesh Thapa gave away awards to the winners. NPC walked away with Rs 101,000 while runner-up NRT received Rs 51,000.



Anil Gurung of NRT was adjudged the best player of the tournament. He received a purse of Rs 15,000. NPC’s Jumanu Rai and Chetan Ghimire were joint topscorers with three goals each.
