NHRC concerned over use of children in Ring Road human chain

KATHMANDU, Nov 27: National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has expressed serious concerns towards the increasing trend of use of children in the public protest programs.

The NHRC has said that in the backdrop of the human chain program organized by the organizations of academic institutes in the capital on Friday.


"Use of children in the sit-ins, protest programs and demonstrations is against child rights," the NHRC said in a press statement, calling on the stakeholders concerned to ensure child rights.

Education in a free and fair atmosphere is the unalienable rights of children and this right should not be curtailed under any pretext, the national human rights body stressed. Students took part in a 27 kilometer long human chain program along the Ring Road jointly organized by the Private and Boarding Schools Organization of Nepal ( PABSON), the National Private and Boarding Schools Association of Nepal ( N-PABSAN), Higher Secondary School Association of Nepal ( HISSAN), Joint Students Organization, Teachers' Federation including others, demanding 'rights to life and education'.

The use of children in such programs of protests is against the UN Convention on Child Rights and Children's Act-1992 BS, the statement adds. RSS
