According to Joint Secretary Hari Dahal, spokesperson at the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives, bird flue was detected in Sharanamati village, 40 kilometers to the southwest of Kakarbhitta, Jhapa.
The ministry had carried out a lab test after about 150 chickens in the village died in two days. “We had sent samples to London after we found bird flu,” said Dahal. “It is confirmed today [Friday] by a London-based lab that this is a bird flu case.”
Spokesperson Dahal said they will start culling and killing chickens in the area. “A team is already there in Jhapa,” he said. “We will dispatch another team on Saturday for the purpose.”
The government had declared Mechinagar Municipality in Jhapa "bird-flu affected area" after detecting bird flu cases on January 16. The government had said the bird flu was under control in the first week of February.
