Nepalis traveling to India asked to carry ID

KATHMANDU: The government has asked Nepali citizens traveling to India to carry identification documents bearing photograph. The government notice comes in the wake of terrorist attacks in Mumbai, India. In a press statement issued Monday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has said passport, citizenship certificate or driving license could be produced as identification document. [break]

"After recent incidents in India, the Indian administration has tightened security in the country," the statement said.



"We have information that a person is asked to compulsorily produce identification documents during travels, at hotels or for admission in the hospital," it added.

Nepal and India share an open border and the peoples of the two countries could cross the border freely without requiring any identification documents.
