Nepal rout Sri Lanka 8-0 in Women’s World Cup qualifiers

Captain Sabitra Bhandari 'Samba' completed the hat-trick in the match in Uzbekistan, while four other players scored goals.

KATHMANDU, July 2: The Nepali Women’s National Football Team registered a thumping 8-0 victory over Sri Lanka in their second match of the AFC Women's Asian Cup Qualifiers. Captain Sabitra Bhandari 'Samba' completed the hat-trick in the match in Uzbekistan, while four other players scored goals.


Nepal took the lead through Geeta Rana's goal. Captain Sabitra Bhandari doubled Nepal's lead in the 20th minute.


Samba scored her second goal of the match in the 41st minute and then added another goal to complete her hat-trick in the first half. Nepal led 4-0 by the end of the first half.

In the second half, Nepal continued to shower goals. Geeta Rana scored her second goal of the match in the 54th minute.


In the 61st minute, Nisha Thokar scored her first goal for the national team to give Nepal a 6-0 lead. Rekha Poudel scored the seventh goal in the 78th minute and Pooja Rana scored the eighth goal at the end of the match.


Earlier, Nepal had defeated Laos 9-0 in the first match, while Sri Lanka lost 10-0 to hosts Uzbekistan.


Nepal is ranked 100th and Sri Lanka 159th in the FIFA rankings.
