A press statement issued by the embassy says the programs were mainly targeted at familiarizing Americans with Nepal’s rich culture and natural beauty to encourage them to travel and invest in Nepal. [break]
The first day of the two-day event was ‘Embassy Open House’ at the ambassador’s residence. Cultural Tourism DC- Passport DC, a local non-profit organization supported the program by conducting widespread publicity of the program several weeks before the event took place and providing transportation facilities to the visitors attending the event.
At least 40 embassies including the Nepalese embassy have participated at the ‘Embassy Open House’ program. More than 30,000 visitors were estimated to have visited the program.
Visitors enjoyed Nepali cuisine, watched patiently video presentation of natural and cultural wonders of Nepal, rocked in folk music, grabbed Nepali promotional materials and cherished handicraft exhibit during the program.
A number of Nepali Restaurants based in Washington Metropolitan area served Nepali snacks- choila, alu-tama, furundana and pakaudato the visitors at their stalls.
On the occasion embassy officials disseminated information about tourist attractions and investment opportunities in Nepal.
On the second day, embassy organized the ‘Cultural Show: Music and Dances of Nepal’ at Greenburg Theater of American University in Washington DC with a view to familiarize the audiences withNepal’s rich diversity in culture, costumes, tradition, and variety of music and dances of Nepal and simultaneously entertain them.
Traditional dances like CharyaNritya,Bajrayogini dance and Maruni,Bhojpuri, Newari and Gopi Krishna dances were performed at the show. Similarly variety of Nepali folk dances, instruments and live music were performed. The audiences were spell bounded by the variety of performance.At least 300 people including the officials of the State Department attended the Show.
Nepalese ambassador to the US Dr. Shankar Prasad Sharma welcomed the audience by highlighting the country’s rich cultural diversity and tourism attractions of Nepal.
