Nepal-India-China cooperation mulled

KATHMANDU, Jan 31: A meeting of politicians, scholars and businessmen from India, Nepal and China was held in Kathmandu to start fresh discourse on trilateral cooperation among the three countries.



The meeting organized by Institute of International and Strategic Studies on Wednesday concluded that trans-country power trade, travel and tourism could be one of the several areas where the three countries can work together within the trilateral framework of cooperation. [break]



"The meeting has started a fresh discourse on trilateral cooperation between China, India and Nepal. The idea will gain wider currency once Nepal achieves political stability," said NC leader Dr Shekhar Koirala, who was also a participant of the meeting.



According to a press statement issued on Thursday, the China-India-Nepal Trilateral Meeting agreed that specifics and concrete projects would be initiated at the earliest to give immediate impetus to the concept of China-India-Nepal trilateral cooperation.



The meeting chaired by Himalaya Shamsher Rana, founder and first Governor of Nepal Rastra Bank, concluded that Nepal could promote and facilitate a discourse of cooperation between two of the fastest growing economies in the world within the bound of trilateral framework. There has been an agreement on holding the meeting alternatively in Nepal, China and India.







Dr Cui Hongjian, Director of European Studies, China Institute of International Studies, Beijing; Prof Liu Jiawei, Assistant Director of South Asia-West China Cooperation and Development Studies, Sichuan University, Chengdu; and Prof Zhang Shubin, Director of the Confucius Institute, Nepal, who presented a paper on behalf of Prof Che Minghuai, Deputy President of the Tibet Academy of Social Sciences, Lhasa participated in the meeting.



Ravi Bhoothalingam, Honorary Fellow, Institute of Chinese Studies, New Delhi; Colonel Virendra Sahai Verma, Institute of Chinese Studies, New Delhi; and Tshering Chonzom, PhD scholar, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, Krishna Bahadur Mahara, Dr. Shekhar Koirala, Dr. Durgesh Man Singh, Lieutenant General (retd.) Sadip Bahadur Shah, Kul Man Ghising, Siddhant Raj Pandey and Director of NIISS Bhaskar Koirala were also among those participating in the first of its kind meeting.
