KATHMANDU, May 4: With the slogan 'Sustainable communities begin with compost,' Nepal Compost Awareness Week 2082 BS kicked off today with a series of events. The Nepal Compost Consortium is leading the week-long initiative, which brings together participants from composting, waste management, agriculture, rooftop farming, and related sectors.
Former Minister Ganesh Shah said the Nepal Compost Consortium, a collaborative platform of various stakeholders, launched the campaign to raise public awareness, promote behavioral change, and encourage local solutions for composting. For the past 26 years, countries around the world have celebrated International Compost Awareness Week, and this year, Nepal is joining the global movement during the first week of May.
Easy ways to live more eco-friendly lifestyle
Nepal is celebrating the event for the first time through the joint efforts of organizations involved in composting and waste management. The consortium has scheduled programs from May 4 to May 10 in Kathmandu and other parts of the country.
Throughout the week, organizers will partner with schools, universities, local governments, community groups, and eco-friendly businesses to host a variety of activities. As part of the program, the consortium organized a Compost Awareness Rally today from 7:00 to 9:00 AM, starting at Bhrikutimandap and concluding at Basantapur, with active participation from stakeholders in composting and waste management.
The campaign encourages every Nepali—from households and schools to offices and industries—to manage organic waste responsibly and contribute to compost production. The Nepal Compost Consortium reaffirmed its long-term commitment to promoting composting and organic waste management across the country through collaboration with government bodies, NGOs, academic institutions, the private sector, and civil society.
