KATHMANDU, Dec 3: Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) has increased load-shedding hours to up to 57 hours per week from existing 44 hours per week.

The new schedule will come into effect from Friday.

The decision will hardly hit urban consumers who have been using electricity as cooking fuel due to shortage of LP gas owing to Indian blockade.

NEA will cut power supply for around nine and half hours every day. The power utility has cited massive rise in demand amid falling generation due to decline in water flow in major hydropower projects as the reasons behind raising load-shedding hours.

Many hydropower projects, including Upper Bhotekoshi, which were damaged by the April earthquake are yet to resume generation.

NEA has also appealed to consumers to not use electric appliances during the peak hours.
