KATHMANDU, Dec 31: Senior leaders of Nepali Congress and Communist Party of Nepal (Unifief Marxist Leninist) have agreed to collectively exert pressure on the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) to implement past agreements.

At a meeting held at the UML headquarters in Balkhu, the leaders concluded that the Maoists are continuously refusing to implement the agreements and still using intimidation and threats, an NC leaders said.

“We have agreed that CPN-UML as the ruling party and Nepali Congress as the main opposition party must collectively press for implementation of the prime minister’s commitment to fulfil Nepali Congress’ 9-point demand,” said Nepali Congress leader Dr Minendra Rijal, after the meeting.

He said the leaders of both the parties agreed that the demands raised by the NC were part of the seven-point agreement signed by Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal with major political parties before formation of the current ruling coalition.

UML leaders said the concerns of both the sides were same. “We have also strongly realized that the Maoists have made a number of agreements but have not implemented even a single one,” said senior UML leader Amrit Bohara. Return of property and dissolution of Young Communist League’s paramilitary structures were part of the seven-point agreement signed by the ruling parties.

Bohara said leaders from both NC and the UML have concluded in the meeting that the situation has worsened in the country and relation among the political parties is turning bitter everyday because of the Maoists’ continuous refusal to implement the past pacts and agreements. “Because of the failure in implementing the past agreements, people have not been able to get the fruit of the peace process,” Bohara said.

The leaders also have agreed to exert pressure on the Maoists without further widening the present difference, according to Bohara. “Both the sides made it clear that making common position on the issue of implementation of past pacts is in no way concerned with government change,” he added.
