KATHMANDU, Aug 23: Nepali Congress lawmaker Jitendra Narayan Dev has urged the government to make an official position public on the Kashmir issue.

Speaking at the National Assembly on Friday, lawmaker Dev claimed that the statement given by the Minister for Foreign Affairs Pradeep Gyawali was not good enough.

He also suggested the government to forge a national consensus before making the official position public on the issue. "The government should make its position public only after discussions with opposition parties," he said.

“Foreign Minister Gyawali said that Nepal is closely observing the Kashmir issue. But for how long?” Dev said.

He said that Nepal should not remain silent on the Kashmir issue as the neighboring countries have already made their positions public on the same.

He added that the main opposition Nepali Congress will come up with its official statement on the issue once the government makes its position public on the same.

In another context, Dev criticized the government for not making its positions clear about the 1950 Peace and Friendship Treaty with the Indian side during recently-concluded fifth Joint Commission meeting.
