KATHMANDU, Dec 2: Madhesi Peoples´ Rights Forum-Republican (MPRF-R), a constituent party of the United Democratic Madhesi Front (UDMF), has given a 15-day ultimatum to the government to implement the remaining issues of the four-point agreement reached among the Madhesi alliance and the UCPN (Maoist) on August 29.

A meeting of MPRF-R central committee held on Thursday in Singha Durbar concluded that the party must review its decision to participate in the government if remaining issues of the four-point agreement are not implemented within 15 days.

"We have given 15-day ultimatum to the government and UDMF to implement the Madhesi issues incorporated in the four-point agreement; if our demands are not met we will review our decision to participate in the government," Vice-chairman of MPRF-R Rajkishor Yadav told Republica. Yadav said they will be compelled to take stern measures if their concerns are not addressed within given timeframe.

General Secretary of MPRF-R Atmaram Sah said they will inform the heads of the Madhes-based political parties associated with the UDMF about the party´s decision and will urge them to take necessary initiative to implement the four-point agreement within 15 days.

He informed that their party took such a decision after the leaders at the meeting demanded that there must be a deadline for implementation of the agreement.

At the meeting of 23-member central committee, the leaders asked the party´s leadership why most Madhesi issues raised in the agreement did not get fully implemented.

"Who barred implementation of the agreement? How could we make the government fulfill our demands if we can´t do it even by holding dozens of ministries?" a leader quoted the central members saying at the seven-hours long meeting.

Vice-chair Yadav said he proposed to take necessary decision through the Thursday´s meeting. “I forwarded my view that the party should take a decision regarding participation in the government at today´s (Thursday) meeting, but other friends suggested to give the Madhesi alliance a chance to make the government meet our demands," he stated.

He opined that they would also reconsider their participation in the UDMF if the alliance fails to exert pressure on the government to implement the remaining issues of the four-point agreement.

The leaders said that there has been no progress on issues raised by the Madhesi community, including recruitment of Madhesi youths in the national army and resolving problems regarding citizenship.
