Mountain Sports Festival kicks off

KATHMANDU, March 4: Mountain Sports Festival officially kicked off in Pokhara on Monday. Though events like canoeing and paragliding have already concluded, the month-long festival was formally inaugurated by Hari Prasad Nepal, secretary at the Ministry of Youth and Sports, in Pokhara on Wednesday.



Nepal Mountain Sports Federation has organized the festival that includes 14 adventure sports. The federation said the festival is focused on developing adventure sports in the country and promoting Nepal as a destination for adventure sports.[break]



The canoeing event was held in the Bhotekoshi River, Sindhupalchowk while the paragliding event was held in Pokhara. According to Yuvaraj Lama, member secretary of National Sports Council and president of the federation, different events will be held in Kaski, Kathmandu, Sindhupalchowk and Mustang during the festival. The festival is scheduled to conlcude at Begnas, Kaski on March 30.



The festival features events like paragliding, traditional archery, golf, cross-country race, climbing, canoeing, motorcycling, mountain-bike race, triathlon, adventure motor race and equestrian.



"This type of festival would help attract tourists, who love adventure sports as it promotes Nepal as a destination for adventure sports," said Lama. According to Lama, around 2,100 adventure sports lovers, including 200 foreigners, are expected to participate in the festival.



The winner of each event will bag Rs 20,000 along with a trophy named Sagarmatha Award while the runner-up will get Lumbini Award and Rs 10,000. The third position holders will get Annapurna Award and Rs 5,000.



Bikers of the Himalaya event will take place on March 9 and 10 on the Pokhara-Mustang route while the traditional archery event will take place in Jomsom on March 10. Likewise, cross-country race will take place on March 16.



Inaugurating the festival, Secretary Hari Prasad Nepal said the festival would help promote Pokhara and the country as a destination for adventure sports.

According to NSC, Jimmy Messenger of the UK has won the 14th International Paragliding, a part of the festival, that concluded on Sunday.
