MAKWANPUR, May 25: Police on Friday said that locals thrashed a mother and her daughter, who is in her late twenties, on the charge of practising witchcraft in Makwanpur district.

Five days ago, locals in Faparbadi VDC-1 in the district had severely beaten up both the mother and daughter after the daughter rejected the charge of the locals that her mother was a witch, according to police. The victims have been identified as Pokchi Maya Rumba and her 26-year-old daughter Sunita Rai.[break]

After the mistreatment, Rai has sustained bruises on several parts of her body and is undergoing medical treatment at a local clinic for the last five days, reported the Area Police Office (APO) of the VDC.

As many as five locals including Babu Lal Gole of the VDC had thrashed the duo on Monday, said Rai.

She further said, “Locals had been frequently mistreating her mother by calling her a witch. I countered as I couldn´t tolerate the allegation against my mother.”

After the allegation, relatives of the victim had lodged a complaint at the APO seeking security. However, the police at APO had tried to settle the issue by arranging negotiations between both the parties at the Integration Mobile Camp in the VDC. “But the thrashing incident happened before the two parties sat for negotiations,” said Buk Bahadur Rauth, police sub-inspector at the APO.

He also said the police will take action against those involved in beating up the women.
