RAUTAHAT, Dec 10: It has been only two weeks since schools in Rautahat district finally opened after a prolonged shutdown enforced by the agitating United Democratic Madhesi Front (UDMF). However, students are unable to concentrate on their studies as the drastic increase in cold has caused many of them to fall sick.

The UDMF had forcefully shut schools for over three months to express its dissatisfaction over the newly promulgated constitution of the country.Nearly 800,000 students in Tarai region had been deprived of education due to their agitation. After locals and other stakeholders piled pressure on the agitating groups to stop obstructing school operation, the central committee of the UDMF took the decision to allow schools to open in the mornings.

However, chilly weather is keeping many students from attending classes. Parents have been expressing their disappointment toward the timing of the school, which starts from 6 am and goes on till 11 am.

Teachers and school operators said students have not been able to concentrate on studies due to health problems arising from cold. Two days ago, two children of Internation Bal Academy in Gaur-8 had lost consciousness due to cold. “First grader Rajdip Pandit and sixth grader Nikita Kumari fell unconscious on the same day,” informed Santosh Poudel, the school principal.

“Madhes agitation has not ended yet. Since protests are being organized in the afternoon, we are forced to run classes in the mornings,” said a UDMF leader Anil Singh.
