Israeli Minister for Tourism of the State Dr Uzi Landau, Nepali ambassador to Israel Prahlad Kumar Prasai and Mayor of Tamar Regional Council Dov Litvnoff jointly inaugurated the monument amidst a special function organized to mark the diamond jubilee of the first human ascent of the top of the world´s highest peak, according to a press statement issued by Nepali embassy in Israel.[break]
This is a joint project of the Embassy of Israel in Kathmandu and the Embassy of Nepal in Tel Aviv which aims to promote tourism through publicity of the highest and the lowest place on earth well as well as mark the long-standing friendly relations between the two countries.
A similar ceremony was held on April 23 at Namche Bazaar, the gateway to the Mount Everest to unveil a monument with embedded stones from the Dead Sea in Israel, the lowest place on earth.
Addressing a function held to unveil the monument in the Dead Sea, Mayor Litvinoff said it was an opportunity to promote tourism in both the countries and briefed the significance of the location of the monument that connects Jordan by peace road. He also stated that the Dead Sea and the Mount Everest both are facing challenges due to global warming.
Israeli Minister for Tourism Landau said the monument will further promote exchange of tourists between the two countries. He mentioned that around 9,000 Israeli young tourists are visiting Nepal each year.
Ambassador of Nepal to Israel Prasain thanked Mayor Litvinoff for making the event possible. “Both countries have been able to send a clear message that despite geographical distance the two friendly countries are very much closer,” he said.
Officials from the Israeli government, a large number of Israeli friends of Nepal and members of the Nepali community in Israel also participated in the function.
While thanking the government of Israel for their continued support to the development of Nepal through technical and other forms of cooperation, Ambassador Prasai expressed confidence that the bilateral relations between the two friendly two countries will further strengthen in the days the come.
On the occasion, Director of Southeast Asia Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) of Israel Chaim Chosen expressed hope that Israel would be able to contribute to the development of Nepal, which was among Israel´s few friends in the decades of 1960 and onwards.
